The park was opened in 1984[2] to help meet the recreation needs of people in the local area.[1] In late 2009 a new children's playground was built.[3]
In November 2009 the Hillfield Park (Users) Committee was created, people of all ages meet regularly to discus problems and propose improvements to the park.
The park is home to a wide variety of bird life including swallows, swifts, herons, peregrine falcons and buzzards. It also supports many mammals including hares, foxes and otters.
The park has a track for mountain bikers, 3 car parks and 5 different hills which are great for children. When it snows the biggest hill by the lake is used for tobogganing and sledging by many local people. The park also has a basketball court and a seating area. The park is known for having many different varieties of mushrooms, which are collected by experienced mushroom pickers.
"Protect it for generations!" is a scheme which will run from Summer 2010 to encourage locals to look after the park. There will be many volunteering opportunities and children's activities. The activities will include litter picking, graffiti removal and hedge laying.
